Latest Julian Sayin injury update raises significant concerns

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day offered an update on quarterback Julian Sayin’s injury, and it is not exactly an encouraging one.

On his radio show, Day said Sayin is progressing from what has been reported to be an elbow injury. However, the coach indicated that the quarterback’s return is nowhere near imminent.

“It looks to be healing,” Day said. “It’s not gonna be next week or next month, it’s gonna take some time, but for the long term we feel like we’re on a good track here.”

Based on the timeline Day is offering, Sayin will not be back during the regular season. His status for the College Football Playoff appears to be in doubt as well provided the Buckeyes make the field.

That playoff bid is suddenly no sure thing. After a disappointing defeat to USC last week, the Buckeyes have already lost twice, and almost certainly cannot afford to lose again if they want to make the playoff field. That means they will have to navigate games against Oregon, Northwestern, Nebraska, and Michigan, and they will have to do so without Sayin at quarterback.

Sayin had thrown for 2,007 yards with 19 touchdowns and four interceptions before suffering the injury roughly three weeks ago in a win over Indiana.
