TEMPE — Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt has been downgraded to doubtful ahead of Saturday’s game at Utah, a move that creates uncertainty in the team’s offensive outlook.

Leavitt was previously listed as probable earlier this week.

Head coach Kenny Dillingham has not publicly disclosed the nature or severity of Leavitt’s injury and the downgrade suggests lingering issues may hinder the quarterback’s ability to perform at full capacity. This is a blow to the Sun Devils that rely on Leavitt’s mobility and quickness.

ASU will turn to Jeff Sims if needed, a veteran passer who previously has had experience with Georgia Tech and Nebraska. Sims played briefly last season when Leavitt exited a game following a hit to the ribs.

The sudden change forces Arizona State’s coaching staff to make sudden adjustments, possibly using more of the running game or simplifying game plans for Sims’ sudden start — if Leavitt can’t go. The final decision is expected closer to kickoff on Saturday, but the downgrade on Thursday suggests the Sun Devils quarterback may be dealing with something more serious than originally diagnosed.

The blow comes after ASU was able to string together three straight wins, with their last win against TCU on Sept. 26. Leavitt completed 27 of 39 passes for two touchdowns, rushed for 62 yards on 13 carries and scored one touchdown.

After entering the season with high expectations, struggling early and improving as the year has gone on, Leavitt’s absence could disrupt the chemistry the team has developed with the quarterback.

Arizona State will face Utah on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7:15 p.m.
