A former Hugh Freeze quarterback has entered the transfer portal.
Kaidon Salter, Liberty's starting quarterback, has entered the transfer portal, per Hayes Fawcett of On3. Salter was originally playing at Tennessee in 2020 before transferring to Liberty in 2021. Salter appeared in eight games in 2022 under Freeze, completing 58.4% of his passes for 1,088 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions.
Following Freeze's departure Salter was named the starting quarterback of the Flames underneath new head coach Jamey Chadwell. As a full-time sophomore starter this season, Salter threw for 2,876 yards, 32 touchdowns and six interceptions while running for 1,089 yards and 12 more touchdowns.
So far, Auburn has spent the majority of the portal cycle seemingly uninterested in taking a quarterback, but following Payton Thorne's poor performance in the bowl game Hugh Freeze has made it clear that the quarterback competition is "wide open."
Taking a transfer could still be on the table, but Auburn's quarterback room is going to be pretty stocked heading into 2024. Thorne will be competing for the job alongside sophomore Holden Geriner, four-star freshman Walker White, and bowl-game spark Hank Brown. Adding Salter to the mix could make things interesting.
Salter was a four-star prospect coming out of high school in 2020.
