Longtime College Football Announcer Ousted Before 2026 Season

A longtime college football announcer has officially been ousted from his gig ahead of the 2026 season.

Georgia announced Friday that Jeff Dantzler would replace Scott Howard as the play-by-play voice of the Bulldog Radio Network. Howard had been serving as the play-by-play announcer for Georgia Bulldogs games for nearly four decades. The Bulldogs thanked Howard for “nearly four decades of work," adding that he would continue to serve as the basketball announcer.

However, it was unclear if Howard was choosing to step away on his own, or if he was being ousted from the position. Now, we know that it is the latter.

Howard announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was officially ousted by the school, as it wasn't his choice.

"Thank you to everyone for all the messages. Didn’t know that many people had my number . Just to clear up any confusion, respectfully, it was not my decision to step away from the football broadcast," he wrote.

Howard had been a part of Georgia football broadcasts since 1993, when he joined the booth as a color analyst alongside Larry Munson. When Munson retired in 2008, he took over as the play-by-play man.

Georgia Bulldogs fans are saddened by his ousting

Georgia fans are disappointed.

"You will be so missed! I have always loved listening to you! Even as far back with GMD! He’s TEENY!! So many of us are absolutely ! Just don’t get it! Will NOT be the same! I will no longer be listening to radio for Dawg games! DGD!" one wrote.

"Spent many hours driving Georgia backroads listening to your calls. Many core Georgia football memories have your voice narrating. Thanks for everything, Scott," one shared.

"Really hate to hear this. You’ve always been one of my absolute favorite PBP announcers, even when I was hanging with you and the SID guys back in the mid-90’s," another shared.

"I grew up listening to Larry. I didn’t think anyone could come close. He’s a hard act to follow but you did a heck of a good job, my friend. I so appreciated your knowledge and focus and the energy you brought to your calls. I’ve heard Jeff, and no offense to him, but he’s no SH!" one added.

Georgia has yet to publicly comment on the reasoning behind the move.
