Lou Holtz Takes Shot At Ryan Day, Ohio State After Week 1 Win

The back and forth between Ohio State's Ryan Day and legendary Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz has continued into 2025.

The feud dates back a couple of years when Holtz made the claim that the Buckeyes were too "soft" to beat the Irish ahead of their Sept. 2023 matchup.

"He has lost to Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Michigan twice — and everybody who beats them does so because they're more physical than Ohio State," Holtz said of Day and OSU at the time. "I think Notre Dame will take that same approach."

Those comments prompted an out-of-character response from Day following the Bucks' hard-fought 17-14 win, where he went on a heated postgame rant on NBC about the then-86-year-old Holtz and his opinion of Ohio State's program.

'Ohio against the world'

"I'd like to know where Lou Holtz is right now," Day told Kathryn Tappen of NBC Sports. "What he said about our team, I cannot believe. This is a tough team right here. We're proud to be from Ohio. It's always been Ohio against the world, and it'll continue to be Ohio against the world."

"I don't know where [Holtz] gets off saying those type of things," the coach added. "I have some other things I'd like to say, too, but I'm not going to say [them] because I'm more respectful than he is."

Holtz takes another shot at OSU, addresses relationship with Day

Now Holtz is back to criticizing the Buckeyes again after the team's low-scoring victory over Texas in Week 1. Telling Dan Dakich on his OutKick podcast that he doesn't believe the defending national champs are a "great" team.

“You remember me telling you, I don’t think Ohio State’s a great football team,” Holtz began. “I know the schedule is very, very good, but when you’re at home and you’re outgained by well over 100 yards, you just can’t look at it and say, ‘Okay, we’re great. We won the game.’ They are 1-0 and that’s the objective they had going in that game, but they’re not a great football team."

“I would not be overwhelmed about facing Ohio State, although I was surprised that they lost Knowles, their defensive coordinator, I thought there’d be a big drop off on their defense, but Ohio State’s defense played outstanding football," the Hall of Famer continued. "So I think we’ll have to see how good Michiganis. We’ll have to see how good other teams are.”

Holtz went on to talk about his relationship with Day and where it stands after his fiery reply two years ago.

“Ryan Day [can do] whatever he wants. I did write him a congratulatory letter, but I never heard back from him. I’m not sure he could write but in any event … he’s obviously a good coach, he’s a good recruiter … You look at his win-loss record, it’s really tremendous," Holtz said. "But let’s not get overwhelmed, because the Big Ten doesn’t have that many great football teams in it this year, but we’ll find out.”

Day is 71-10 since taking over for Urban Meyer in Columbus and has helped put countless players in the NFL. Outside of his recent losing streak to Michigan, there really isn't a lot you can criticize him about. But something tells us this won't be the last we hear from Holtz about the 2019 B1G Coach of the Year.
