Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab five-star prospect Lamar Brown remains a priority prospect for Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers as his process ramps up this offseason.

Brown, the No. 1 overall prospect in Louisiana, has proven to be a two-way star during his prep career while shining on both sides of the ball in the trenches.

After debuting as the No. 1 interior offensive lineman in the 2026 Recruiting Cycle, Brown has made the move to defense where he will play defensive line at the next level.

Now, 247Sports has updated the current recruiting rankings with Brown coming in as the No. 1 defensive lineman in America. He's the No. 8 overall prospect in the nation.

The 6-foot-3, 285-pounder will now continue navigating his recruitment process with the LSU Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies battling it out for the talented Louisiana native.

The USC Trojans also remain in the mix for his services after landing a visit from Brown during the spring.

In March, Brown revealed his would be taking four official visits this summer with the LSU Tigers securing one of their own.

The Schedule:
•Miami: May 30-June 1
•Florida State: June 6-8
•Texas A&M: June 13-15
•LSU: June 20-22

He will commit to the program of his choice on July 10th, according to Rivals.

“It is really those four schools,” Brown told On3’s Chad Simmons at the time. “It really came down to me deciding to play defensive line in college. A lot of schools wanted to play offensive line, but those four schools were the ones recruiting me the hardest as a defensive lineman.”

On Wednesday, the LSU Tigers made their way to University Lab to see Brown for an in-person visit to check-in with their top target in the 2026 Recruiting Cycle.

In the spring, Brown told On3 Sports that the LSU Tigers were at the top of his list with multiple programs battling for his services.

“LSU is a little above A&M at No. 1. Florida State and Miami are tied after those two at the top,” he said.

As it currently stands, all signs point towards LSU battling it out against the Texas A&M Aggies. Brown remains high on the program in College Station after taking multiple visits to the Lone Star State.

“I talk to them almost every day,” Brown told On3 Sports of the Aggies’ staff in March. “I talked to Coach Tony (Jerod-Eddie) yesterday and I talked to Coach (Mike) Elko today. Those two and Coach (Sean) Spencer are great guys.

"I love those guys. … They are great people, great coaches, I trust them and I love what they do. Coach Spence has a great resume, A&M has produced defensive linemen and it is a great place.”

Observations From Oklahoma's Fourth Fall Practice on Monday

Oklahoma opened a portion of its fourth fall practice to local media members on Monday. There was a one-on-one session between OU’s skill players and its linebackers and defensive backs, but most of the open portion of practice was dedicated to special teams and individual drill work. Sooners on SI had Ryan Chapman and Carson Field on site on Monday. Here is what they observed at practice. On the injury front, the Sooners had an addition to the group of players out of pads. Wide receiver Deion Burks did not participate in the opening portion of practice on Monday. He was without pads and in turf shoes instead of cleats. Offensive lineman Febechi Nwaiwu was back at practice after missing Friday’s practice. Nwaiwu was back working with the first group of offensive linemen in drills. Veteran transfer Derek Simmons was absent from Monday’s practice. Receiver Keontez Lewis closed the one-on-one session with a toe-tap catch on the sideline against freshman Courtland Guillory, though both sides believed they won the rep. No instant replay available at practice. Lewis also made a diving catch in the back of the end zone against Jacobe Johnson, though it was “ruled” as incomplete. Lewis was without a doubt the standout of that portion of practice. Freshman Elijah Thomas also made a nice grab. He worked against Maliek Hawkins. Safety Robert Spears-Jennings completely overpowered tight end Will Huggins during their rep, but Kaden Helms made a nice move to get open against Omarion Robinson. Defensive back Jermiah Newcombe also had a nice pass breakup when battling Jer’Michael Carter. Read More Oklahoma Football Which Oklahoma Players Could Just Be Late Bloomers? Mateer transferred from Washington State after the 2024 season. Wide receivers coach Emmett Jones and running backs coach DeMarco Murray calmly took their position groups through drills later in practice. Jones was helping his unit stay low and explode out of their breaks, while Murray was coaching his group through some work in the open field. During the special teams work, assistant Doug Deakin again took control of the microphone to convey exactly everything he needed as far as spacing goes on kickoff return coverage. Later this afternoon, the media is expected to meet with defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis as well as a handful of players.

Green Bay Packers: 2 Notable Former Wide Receivers Labeled as Surprise Cut Candidates

As the Green Bay Packers deal with their own crowded wide receiver room, multiple former Packers pass-catchers are also embroiled in position battles across the league. Notably, two veterans that turned in many successful seasons in Green Bay now find themselves battling to make rosters and have been labeled as big names that could become surprise cuts when rosters are trimmed down. New York Jets May Soon Be Done With Former Green Bay Packers Receiver Allen Lazard Former Packers receiver Allen Lazard was always a favorite of Aaron Rodgers during their time together in Green Bay. When Rodgers left the franchise, Lazard ended up following the quarterback to the New York Jets. While the Rodgers era for Gang Green has gone up in flames, Lazard remains on the roster – for now. Lazard entered camp as the presumed second receiver behind Garrett Wilson, but so far, fellow veteran Josh Reynolds has seemingly beaten out Lazard for the second spot. A former Detroit Lion, Reynolds has reportedly been building a good rapport with new signal-caller Justin Fields, leaving Lazard potentially relegated to slot duties. Although the Jets have receiver depth problems, some experts don’t believe that Lazard will survive cuts. The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt has stated that he does not expect Lazard to be on the 53-man roster. Some names behind Lazard on the current depth chart include veteran Tyler Johnson and rookie Arian Smith, both of whom have had flashes of ability in camp so far. Several of the younger players also offer one thing that Lazard notably doesn’t – the ability to play on special teams. If Lazard is cut by the team, it would mean the team would have moved on from another former Packer after dumping both Rodgers and Davante Adams this summer. Can Former Green Bay Packers Receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling Stick in Seattle? Marquez Valdes-Scantling was a member of the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2021, playing out his rookie contract with the team while being a big part of the offense. He had over 2,000 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns for the green and gold before leaving for Kansas City in free agency. In 2025, Valdes-Scantling was with the New Orleans Saints until he signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks worth around $4 million. Despite the 29-year-old being a proven veteran and solid deep threat, Valdes-Scantling currently finds himself near the edge of the Seahawks roster. Rookie receiver Tory Horton has already surpassed Valdes-Scantling on the depth chart and has been the fourth receiver in the team’s first-team rotation so far. Valdes-Scantling has been relegated to the second unit in training camp practices as of early August. Respected NFL writer Brady Henderson has said that Valdes-Scantling has “barely made any” plays throughout camp so far, whereas Horton has continued to catch eyes and has been nicknamed “Jerry Rice Jr.” by teammate Tariq Woolen. Like Lazard, Valdes-Scantling does not offer much on special teams either, and although the Seahawks would love to have a deep threat to compliment Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp, if Valdes-Scantling does not show up in camp, the team could move on from the former Green Bay Packer with little financial consequence.

Yankees quickly pull plug on key trade-deadline acquisition

After a disastrous start to his time in the Bronx, the New York Yankees have seen enough of reliever Jake Bird. Acquired in a trade-deadline deal with the Colorado Rockies, Bird was sent to Triple-A after giving up a game-winning three-run home run against the Texas Rangers on Monday night. The long ball continued what has been a head-shaking start for the 29-year-old right-hander with the Yankees, as he has given up seven runs (six earned) and four hits in just 2.0 innings worked over three games. His recent outings extend what has been a downward spiral for Bird. While with the Rockies, Bird allowed runs in 10 of his last 17 games before being traded, equaling a 13.20 ERA during that stretch. Before that, Bird was one of the most dominant relievers in baseball, posting a 1.41 ERA through his first 28 outings of the season. Bird's collapse in the Bronx goes along with the overall struggles of the Yankees bullpen. Devin Williams, another trade that was supposed to be an answer in the late innings for New York, served up the game-tying homer on Monday night in Texas. Over his last seven appearances, he has a 7.71 ERA, and a potential change at closer could be in the air after manager Aaron Boone's comments after Monday's loss. The Yankees made deals at the deadline to boost the bullpen, bringing in Bird from Colorado, David Bednar from Pittsburgh and Camilo Doval from San Francisco. However, those moves have mostly hurt the Yankees, who also saw leads evaporate in a three-game road sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins. While it's still too early to say the Rockies won the trade by acquiring two prospects for Bird, the early results for the Yankees certainly point in that direction. If Bird isn't able to regain the confidence that was such a big part of his demeanor while in Colorado, the trade will be a decision that New York could regret for the rest of the season and beyond.

Steelers defender announces season-ending ACL injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without a key defensive lineman for the entire season. Via an Instagram post on Tuesday, veteran Dean Lowry revealed he suffered an ACL injury during practice last week. "During a training camp practice last week I sustained an ACL injury that will likely end my season," Lowry wrote. "Hard to comprehend the thoughts and emotions I have felt since then." Lowry said he was "heartbroken" that he wouldn't be able to play with his Steelers teammates in 2025. Lowry, 31, signed with the Steelers in 2024. He played in 12 games for Pittsburgh and started one, recording five tackles and one sack. Lowry was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. He's appeared in 132 games and started in 85, recording 271 tackles, 16.5 sacks, 18 passes defensed and one forced fumble. The injury is frustrating for Lowry, who was entering his 10th season. He was set to rejoin his former Packers teammate, Aaron Rodgers, on a special season in 2025, but instead will have to rehab his injury.
