Newly appointed LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin has a critical task ahead: securing a starting quarterback for the upcoming 2026 campaign.
With Garrett Nussmeier’s eligibility exhausted following his time at LSU, the program anticipates a vigorous hunt for signal-callers through the transfer portal during this offseason.
One name that stands out due to prior connections is Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who thrived under Kiffin’s system with the Rebels. Yet, questions linger about Chambliss’s availability, as it remains uncertain if he will receive approval from the NCAA for an additional season of play.
The situation adds complexity, since no one knows if Chambliss would opt to follow Kiffin to Baton Rouge, remain with Ole Miss, or explore opportunities elsewhere should extra eligibility be approved.
Another prominent candidate drawing attention is Florida’s DJ Lagway, who has surfaced as a potential transfer target for the Tigers.
According to reports from ESPN’s Matt Moscona, LSU representatives have already reached out to those close to the Gators quarterback.
“Quick tidbit: source confirms LSU has made contact with DJ Lagway’s reps,” Moscona wrote. “This shouldn’t come as a great surprise. LSU is in desperate need of quarterback help and should be in the mix for all viable portal options.”
In his initial college year, the young passer accumulated 1,915 passing yards, along with 12 scores through the air and nine picks, while contributing 101 rushing yards. This past season, Lagway built on that foundation by recording 2,264 yards passing, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions, plus 136 yards and one rushing touchdown for a Florida team that ended with a 4-8 record.
On December 15, Lagway shared his plans to join the transfer portal starting January 2, a move that followed Florida’s decision to bring in Jon Sumrall from Tulane as head coach.
“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an incredible program here at the University of Florida,” Lagway. “After much prayer, reflection, and thoughtful consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”
Analysts project Lagway to rank among the most sought-after quarterbacks available in the portal this cycle.
Former Gators coach Steve Spurrier even floated Baylor as a possible destination, noting Lagway’s roots in Willis, Texas. As Kiffin builds his roster in Baton Rouge, the pursuit of a reliable quarterback will dominate headlines.
The transfer portal promises intense competition, with LSU positioned to chase multiple high-profile options. Chambliss’s eligibility waiver could shift dynamics significantly if resolved in his favor. Meanwhile, early outreach to Lagway signals the Tigers’ proactive approach under their new leadership.
With the portal window approaching, expectations are high for impactful additions to the quarterback room.LSU’s success in landing a top talent could define Kiffin’s early tenure.
Fans and observers alike await developments that will shape the team’s offensive outlook for 2026.
