It was an up and down 2024 college football season for LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, his first year as a starter for the Tigers. There were moments of brilliance, seeing the talented signal caller throw for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns, leading the SEC conference in passing. The raw arm talent is clearly there, and has a lot of fans excited heading into the 2025 season.
Nussmeier also ended the year on a strong note the last couple of games after hitting a midseason lull. That has several analysts across the media space projecting a huge breakout season for Nussmeier. Head coach Brian Kelly and the LSU program spent the offseason upgrading the skill positions around their starting quarterback, and many expect a big jump to follow.
In an interview that Nussmeier recently did with ESports Insider, he spoke about a variety of topics, including his offseason, opportunity to compete at the Manning Passing Academy, relationship with Arch Manning, and growth as a player. The latter is what LSU fans wanted to hear about most.
It appears that Nussmeier has a clear handle on what improvements are needed heading into the fall.
"I want to use my legs more at times,” Nussmeier said. “Taking care of the football, those are some areas that I've been focused on. As far as little details, I won't get into those, I'm focused on being the best leader I can. I have team goals that are at the top of my mind. That's my main focus. I just come with the mindset every day to achieve those."
Taking care of the football is something many fans have discussed regarding Nussmeier’s game this offseason. During the 2024 season, he turned the football over 15 times (12 interceptions, three lost fumbles), and some of them came at the worst possible time.
Nussmeier also had very little impact with his legs, rushing for -38 yards on the season. His feel in the pocket was also extremely inconsistent, spinning out into pressure, and not trusting the blocking in front of him enough. There were a lot of mistakes you might expect from a first year starting quarterback.
With the addition of wide receivers Nic Anderson (Oklahoma) and Barion Brown (Kentucky), on top of Aaron Anderson returning, Nussmeier has a ton of talent to work with. It is his final collegiate season before he heads off to the NFL. It appears he has the secret sauce necessary to end his career in Baton Rouge on a very high note.
