LSU vs Vanderbilt Prediction: Which 5-1 Team Is For Real?

It’s like the world went back to assuming Vanderbilt was bad at college football … almost.

It’s not getting any real credit for the 5-1 start after a 30-14 loss to Alabama - and Vegas types know it wasn’t nearly as bad as the final score. Those same investors are the ones giving the Commodores love, but more on that in a moment.

Four of the next five games are at home, and they only leave Tennessee once the rest of the way.

LSU Tigers vs Vanderbilt Commodores Preview

LSU bounced back from a loss at Ole Miss with a win over South Carolina, but even at 5-1, it’s been underwhelming, at least offensively.

With Texas A&M and Alabama up next, and a date at Oklahoma to close the season, there’s no room to lose to the Commodores for the first time since 1990 and the second time since 1957.

Why LSU Will Win

Forget all of the issues with the offensive side. The defense continues to be fantastic.

Ole Miss was able to come up with 24 points in the win over the Tigers, and no one else has been able to get past ten. The Rebels had the only offense to get past 400 yards, too.

The pass rush is getting the job done when needed, but it's more about the big plays at the key times. This bunch has a way of almost never breaking after bending a bit.

Vanderbilt's offense was able to rumble against the mediocre teams on the slate, but it came up with its worst output of the season against South Carolina, only came up with 333 yards against Alabama, and blew up for over 480 yards against everyone else.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Even when things don't quite work, Vanderbilt seems to be okay, and it's not just because of star quarterback Diego Pavia.

The offense wasn't great against South Carolina, but the defense pulled off four takeaways. It was a fight against Alabama, with the attack stalling too often, but the defense, again, stepped up and did a great job to stay alive in the tough loss.

LSU's offense can't seem to put it together. It couldn't do anything in key moments in the loss to Ole Miss, the running game didn't work for far too long. It did work against South Carolina, but the offense's three turnovers made it close.

The Commodore defense isn't going to get run over, but ...

Can the Tiger pass rush get the Commodore offensive front?

Pavia is great at getting the ball out of his hands fast, and the running game overall should have enough moments to keep the chains moving, but ...

LSU's defense will save the day again.

Vanderbilt won't get close to 150 rushing yards, but it'll still be in the hunt in the fourth quarter after an efficient scoring drive late in the third quarter.

And then LSU's pass rush will come through when it has to.
