On Tuesday afternoon the finalists for most of the major awards in college football were announced.
Among the awards to make such an announcement was the Davey O'Brien Award, given to the nation's best quarterback. Three candidates were named as finalists for the award, and, unsurprisingly all three were on the Heisman Trophy watch at some point this season.
Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel were all named as finalists.
"After tabulating the results of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee’s ballots and adding bonus ballots applied through the Davey O’Brien Fan Vote, the three finalists for the National Quarterback Award have been named. This year’s finalists are Oregon senior Dillon Gabriel, Colorado senior Shedeur Sanders and Miami senior Cam Ward," the prestigious college football award said in a statement.
"All three players are first-time finalists for the nation’s oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award. Combined, the three players have been named to the Davey O’Brien Award’s weekly Great 8 a total of 12 times this year and each was tabbed the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week once."
Sanders is arguably the best quarterback in college football this season, showing once again why he'll be a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. So far this season he's completing over 73% of his passes for 3,488 yards and 30 touchdowns with seven interceptions while adding four rushing touchdowns.
The son of NFL legend Deion Sanders sits second in the nation in passing touchdowns, third in completion percentage and fifth in passing yards.
Despite a devastating loss to Kansas over the weekend, he has the Buffaloes at 8-3 on the season and sitting inside the Top 25.
