Major College Football Program Predicted to Fire Head Coach After Saturday's Loss

When the college football season gets rolling, so do the hot seat rumors when it comes to head coaches.

Following the 2024 season, there were 30 head coaching changes at the FBS level, which was down from the record number of 32 the year prior, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. While this could imply that coaches are getting a longer leash or exceeding expectations, in reality it means there will be correction this season.

With notable programs such as Oklahoma State, Auburn and Florida all hoping that their coach can turn things around, Florida's Billy Napier is trending in the wrong direction after Saturday.

Napier's No. 13 Florida squad suffered an 18-16 loss at home to the USF Bulls on Saturday, leading to frustrations with the fourth-year head coach skyrocketing.

With Napier's record falling to 20-20 in Gainsville, On3's Andy Staples broke down that if Napier doesn't figure out a way to turn things around and steal a couple of games in their next few, this will be his final season at Florida.

"If Napier doesn’t want that giant check in the next few months, he’s going to have to win a few of those games listed above," Staples wrote. "So now would be the time for Napier’s team to play in the same uncharacteristic way it played against LSU and Ole Miss last year.

"Because if it makes the same characteristic mistakes it has for most of the Napier era, that era will be over sooner than later," said Staples.

Unfortunately for Napier, things will not get any easier for the Gators as their next four games feature matchups against No. 3 LSU, No. 5 Miami, No. 7 Texas and No. 19 Texas A&M.

However, the Gators do have a roster with enough talent to split this stretch, which could mean good news for Napier and bad news for those who want a fresh start.

Since Urban Meyer's departure in 2010, Napier is Florida’s fourth full-time head coach to attempt to replace him as Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain and Dan Mullen all failed. There's still plenty of football left to be played, but it's unclear if Napier will be around for all of it.
