Multiple media reports had South Dakota State University quarterback transfer Mark Gronowski visiting Iowa Football on Friday. It represented another swing in the portal for the Hawkeyes, clearly in pursuit of an upgrade at the position.
Iowa landed Auburn transfer Hank Brown last month. The program then missed on former Penn State signal caller Beau Pribula after getting him on campus. He ended up at Missouri.
Northwestern transfer Brendan Sullivan played behind center for all of Monday's 27-24 loss to Missouri an the Music City Bowl. He was backed up by Colorado State transfer Jackson Stratton. Brown and incoming freshman Jimmy Sullivan joined the team for bowl practice.
An addition could lead to a subtraction if a current quarterback decides the room is too crowded. Iowa could then add depth in the late portal period.
Gronowski isn't leaving SDSU to be a backup. He's likely to require a sizable NIL deal as well.
The Jackrabbits won back to back national championships with him as their starter. He led them to the FCS semifinals this season, but the three-peat quest ended there.
Gronowski was his level's national player of the year in 2023. For a career in which he's been 49-6 as the starter, the Naperville (IL) native has thrown for 10,903 yards with 93 against 20 interceptions. He's added 1,767 and 37 scores on the ground.
Iowa slowed down SDSU and Gronowski during the 2022 season-opener at Kinnick Stadium. He completed 10 of 26 passes for 87 yards and had -21 rushing yards. The Hawkeyes won a defensive tussle, 7-3.
Gronowski also is considering entering his name into the NFL Draft. There's a soft deadline for that on Monday with the withdrawal deadline being Feb. 7. He's projected to be a mid-to-late round pick.
