Maryland WR Marcus Fleming enters transfer portal following assault charges

Maryland wide receiver Marcus Fleming Jr. has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to Chris Hummer of 247Sports. Fleming was away from the team as he dealt with personal matters.

Fleming was charged with misdemeanor second-degree assault after a felony first-degree assault charge was dropped, according to the Baltimore Sun. The charges stem from an alleged domestic violence incident on June 3 with his ex-girlfriend Ariana Wright, a fellow Maryland student-athlete.

Fleming appeared in a Prince George’s County (MD) Circuit Court on Thursday. He filed second-degree assault charges against Wright as well.

Fleming was a 2020 four-star recruit out of Miami’s Northwestern High School. He initially signed with Nebraska, appearing in one game as a true freshman. He transferred to Maryland and played in six games last season, hauling in 18 catches for 197 yards and a touchdown.

The Terrapins are loaded this season at wide receiver. Dontay Demus, Jr., Rakim Jarrett, Jacob Copeland and Jeshaun Jones lead the stacked position. But, Fleming appeared to be in the line for a role down the line.

Maryland officials were waiting to update his status once his legal matters were settled. However, it appears Fleming is looking for a fresh start somewhere else to continue his collegiate career.
