'Maybe exceeded some early thoughts and expectations' - Insider details how the QBs performed at Tennessee's first spring scrimmage

The Tennessee Vols held their first spring scrimmage on Thursday.

Much of what happened in the scrimmage is a mystery, since the media isn't allowed to watch.

VolQuest's Brent Hubbs, however, joined 104.5 The Zone's Ramon and Will to share a few nuggets about the scrimmage from intel he's gathered.

Vols insider Brent Hubbs dishes on how Tennessee's quarterbacks performed in UT's first scrimmage

Redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and true freshman Faizon Brandon are battling for Tennessee's starting quarterback job this spring and fall.

There are other position battles happening as well, but the quarterback battle is undoubtedly the main event for the Vols this offseason.

Hubbs noted on Friday that MacIntyre didn't perform as well as he'd like on Thursday, while Brandon "maybe exceeded" early expectations.

"I think yesterday, I don't think George probably played to the level he expected," said Hubbs. "I think he's got to be better and be more efficient with the ball. I don't think the receivers overall played particularly well. I think Faizon probably, for a first scrimmage, maybe exceeded some early thoughts and expectations. But here's what I say to all that -- because somebody's going to hear that, and they're going to go, 'Oh Faizon Brandon's ahead, he's taken the lead.' And it's like, no, that's not where this is. That's not what this is about.

"Remember, we did this show (Ramon and Will) last August after George MacIntyre's first scrimmage, and it was all the talk about how George MacIntyre was deep in this race -- he was legitimately in this race. After the second scrimmage, there was no race -- Joey Aguilar had won it. So, it's just one scrimmage. It's seven days into spring. The question now is, how do these two quarterbacks respond from this first scrimmage to the second scrimmage? In a lot of ways, the competition didn't get real until yesterday. No offense to the first six days of spring practice, because those (days) are important, but the quarterback judgment comes out of scrimmages more than it does anything else on the practice field. And yesterday was the first one, and you kind of dropped the gauntlet as the baseline for where you're going with this competition."

This battle is a marathon, it's not a sprint.

Both of these quarterbacks are young, they're still developing as college players. There are going to be ups and downs for both of them this offseason (and during the regular season, too).

Earlier this week, for example, WNML's Riley Haltom reported that MacIntyre looked great in the open portion of practice while noting that Brandon struggled with the placement of his passes.

These are just small data points for each quarterback at this point.

The competition got real on Thursday, but it's still far too early to suggest that anyone is leading in this battle.
