The Miami Hurricanes are the No. 1 team in the nation, but things took a concerning turn on Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that star wide receiver Malachi Toney was dealing with an ankle injury. Later on in the day, Miami released a statement on Toney’s injury.
“Malachi Toney sustained an injury during Wednesday’s practice and is currently undergoing further evaluation by the team’s medical staff. We will share additional updates as appropriate.”
Toney has become a massive part of the Miami offense in his two seasons with the program. As a freshman, he had 84 catches for 970 yards with 7 touchdowns. This season, Toney has 73 receptions for 1,027 tards with 13 touchdowns.
Toney is top-five in the country in yards (4th), receptions (tied for 2nd) and touchdowns (tied for 2nd). He has scored multiple touchdowns in each of the last three games, including a 194-yard, 3-touchdown performance on Oct. 24 against Pitt.
Toney’s best game of the season came on Sep. 4 against Stanford when he had 12 catches for 234 yards and 3 scores, and he even hit the Heisman Trophy pose during the game.
Miami has its toughest test of the season as the Hurricanes face the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend, Indiana.
All eyes will be on Malachi Toney’s status leading up to Saturday.
