Miami Hurricanes' Tyler Van Dyke ranked top QB in the country

Three weeks into the college football season and there's a name atop the QB rankings that not many outside of Miami predicted to be there: Tyler Van Dyke.

Pro Football Focus has the Hurricanes signal-caller graded as the top QB in the entire country through a quarter of the season. Van Dyke has thrown for 822 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception while rushing for one TD on the year as well. His highlight performance came in a week two victory over then No. 23 Texas A&M, where he passed for 375 yards and five TDs.

Van Dyke is more closely resembling the 2021 version of himself that won the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year, as well as the ACC Overall Rookie of the Year award, after a down 2022 campaign. He ranks top ten in the country in passing yards (seventh), yards per attempt (fourth), TD passes (fifth), completion percentage (third), fewest interceptions (third), and passing plays of more than 20 yards (fourth), 30 yards (sixth), and 40 yards (fourth).

A big reason for the improvement has been the addition of offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. Miami installed an air raid-style offense similar to the one Van Dyke saw great success in his first year, under then-offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee. It's an aggressive offense that sees the Hurricanes ranked sixth in the nation in passing yards per attempt at 10.85, all with a rushing attack that ranks 37th in the country while averaging 5.91 yards per rush. That coupled with an offensive line that paves the way for the potent running game and one that has only given up four sacks on the year, means the potential for Van Dyke to only get better is right in front of him.

As the season progresses, and if Van Dyke continues to lead Miami to victories, not only will they continue to climb up the rankings, but Van Dyke will continue to climb another ranking of his own. His current pace has caught the attention of the nation and it's vaulted him from a pre-season dark horse Heisman candidate to firmly into the mix for college football's highest honor. An honor that Miami looks to bring to South Florida for the first time since 1992 when Gino Toretta took home the honor.
