FRISCO, Texas — Micah Hudson’s offseason turned into a saga, but it ended up with him coming back to Texas Tech.
After a freshman season in which he battled injuries, played in eight games, and finished the season injured, the wide receiver opted to hit the transfer portal. He had eight catches for 123 yards.
He quickly found a home — Texas A&M. It put him a bit closer to his hometown of Temple, Texas, where he went to Lake Belton High School.
But he found himself back in the portal in April after the Aggies finished spring workouts. Turns out being an Aggie didn’t agree with him.
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire noticed. But he didn’t call Hudson. He called Hudson’s mother, Patrice Moody. Turns out mother and son had already been talking, and son was getting ready to come see McGuire in Lubbock.
“I called his mom, and I said, ‘I’m going to reach out to Micah’ because his mom didn’t want him to leave,” McGuire said on Tuesday at Big 12 Media Days. “She said, ‘You don’t have to worry about reaching out to Micah. He’s coming to see you face-to-face.’ I said, ‘Well, I can give him a call,’ and she goes, ‘No, whenever he left your office, he did it as a man and he’s going to come back and talk to you face to face.’”
Eleven days after leaving the Aggies, he was back at Texas Tech.
So, what did they talk about? Hudson isn’t at media days to speak for himself. But McGuire said the first thing he talked to Hudson about was what he felt he did wrong and what he could do differently.
Hudson’s season ended with an injury. McGuire said their relationship became strained at one point. Those wounds have been healed, he said.
“I think that really kind of opened things up and took down some of the barriers,” McGuire said. “Maybe he was worried that I’d be upset with him, but he’s been good.”
Hudson came to Texas Tech as one of the most coveted wide receivers in the country in the Class of 2024. He was a consensus five-star recruit by Rivals, 247Sports, On3, and ESPN. At the time of his signing, he was the highest-rated recruit to sign with Texas Tech during the internet ranking era.
Now, he must produce on the field. He’ll get the chance to do that this fall, now that he and McGuire have torn down the wall from last season.
