Earlier today, news broke of Michigan football linebacker Joey Velazquez entering the transfer portal. In addition to Velazquez’s decision, it was reported by On3 that freshman cornerback Cameron Calhoun has entered the transfer portal as well. Calhoun is now the fourth Wolverine player to hit the transfer portal this season.
As a recruit, Calhoun boasted a four-star 247 Sports Composite ranking and was listed as the No. 12 overall recruit coming out of Ohio. In his freshman season, Calhoun briefly saw the field against UNLV and Bowling Green. While Calhoun only saw minimal playing time during his freshman year, Michigan football will certainly feel the loss of a young player with high potential and lots of eligibility remaining.

Michigan is set to lose starting cornerbacks Josh Wallace and Mike Sainristil after this season, opening up a position battle in 2024 for two of three starting spots, with Will Johnson taking the other. Losing a young four-star player like Calhoun is a tough loss for Michigan, but the secondary still appears to be strong with talents like Amorian Walker and Ja’Den McBurrows waiting in the wings.
In addition to returning talent, the transfer season is still early, and Michigan football will have plenty of opportunities to add to their secondary in the portal as well.
