Last year, Ronnie Bell was the Wolverines’ top wide receiver, oftentimes serving as an outlet for JJ McCarthy to find in dire situations. This fall, Michigan football wideout Roman Wilson is gunning for this role and knows that the offense needs someone to step up in order to continue to excel.

Michigan football wideout knows that JJ McCarthy needs a WR1

Michigan football wideout Roman Wilson has seen a solid career with the Maize and Blue this far, though injuries have plagued any hopes of a breakout season to this point. This year, Wilson is “healthy and ready to go,” according to play-caller Sherrone Moore, and could step into the WR1 role for the Wolverines by the end of fall camp.

This morning, Roman Wilson spoke to the media for the first time since fall camp began (last Wednesday) at Schembechler Hall. There, the Wolverines’ rising star wide receiver explained that if JJ McCarthy and the Michigan football offense want to be elite, a new top wide receiver must emerge throughout the coming season.

“We could say Ronnie (Bell) was his go-to receiver last year reception-wise, but that’s the key to every team,” said Michigan football wideout Roman Wilson. “Every great quarterback has a great receiver with him. It’s gonna come down to how elite the passing game is going to be. Who can be that go-to receiver? Who’s going to be dependable? I gotta be there and make plays when he wants me to.”

Is Roman Wilson the Wolverines’ top wide receiver this year?

With JJ McCarthy heading into his second year at the helm for the Wolverines, Roman Wilson said that his connection with QB1 is as strong as ever. With the season just over three weeks out, expect Michigan football to lean on this McCarthy-Wilson connection early and often.

“As the season went on, I definitely started to see JJ become the quarterback he is,” Wilson said. “He’s a great quarterback — that’s just a little bit of our chemistry coming together and just me being there when he needs me and always being ready.”
