The Michigan Wolverines defeated New Mexico 34-17 in their season opener on Saturday night at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, giving coach Sherrone Moore his 10th career win in 15 tries and setting the tone for what fans hope will be another championship season.

The game included the debut of former 5-star QB and the nation's number one overall prospect for the Class of 2025 Bryce Underwood, who impressed everyone from former Michigan running back Blake Corum to his head coach to New Mexico coach Jason Eck, who previously indirectly compared him to LeBron James and Michael Jordan.

Underwood also touched the famous M Club banner at the Big House prior to the game, and did it with a style all his own in a visually arresting photo that began circulating on Sunday.

Underwood Shows Off Hops in Pregame Photo

The Michigan quarterback appeared to out leap all of his teammates in the photo, which was shared by Michigan football photographer Patrick Barron of MGoBlog.

Underwood is one of the taller players on the Wolverines at 6-feet-4 inches tall, weighing in at over 220 pounds.

The photo showed him touching the banner behind his fall camp roommate, senior and team captain Max Bredeson.

Underwood is renowned for his athleticism.

He showed it during the game, completing 21-of-31 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown while also taking part in a highlight reel block near the goal line that sprung running back Justice Haynes for a touchdown.

Michigan Receiver Joins in on the Fun

Michigan receiver Donoven McCulley also appeared to be having a blast before the game as he showed off a huge smile in a sea of maize and blue clad Wolverines players.

The photo was shared in the comments section of the Underwood photo.

McCulley, a former Indiana receiver and quarterback, finished fourth on the Wolverines' team with four catches for 31 yards on the evening.

McCulley and Underwood's pregame exploits were part of an eventful day that included a five-star recruit receiving a phone call (and scholarship offer) from Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford while attending the Ohio State-Texas game.

Ohio State fans earlier called for Desmond Howard to be replaced for one major reason after his multi-year contract with the College GameDay television show on ESPN.

The 2025-26 college football season is only a week in and already Underwood is drawing attention not just for his play during the game but for seemingly everything else that he does before and after the game.

The 18-year-old freshman appears wise and poised beyond his years, both on and off the field, a great sign for Michigan fans foaming at the mouth for another championship run, which could come as soon as this season.
