No. 3 Indiana and Michigan State are set to clash in a Week 8 Big Ten matchup, with the game taking place at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, IN. The undefeated Hoosiers are coming off their biggest victory in school history, a 30-20 road win over No. 3 Oregon in Eugene. The Spartans however were dominated by a suddenly resurgent UCLA squad 38-13 in East Lansing and have now dropped three consecutive games.

Following its monstrous victory over Oregon, Indiana seems on track to make an appearance in the College Football Playoff for the second consecutive season. The win in Eugene marked the Hoosiers’ first win against an AP Top-5 ranked team since 1967, the Hoosiers’ first ever road win against an AP Top-5 ranked team and the Hoosiers’ first season in program history with two top-10 ranked victories (No. 9 Illinois and No. 3 Oregon).
The hiring of Curt Cignetti in Bloomington has completely turned around the program, as the Hoosiers are now an unbelievable 17-2 in 19 games under Coach Cig. This season, Indiana is 6-0 and has won those games by an average of 33.5 points per game. This number could balloon even higher following the matchup against a struggling Michigan State team, which it beat by 37 points last season.
Transfer quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been masterful leading the Hoosier offense. Through six games, he’s completed 72% of his passes for 1,423 yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s found six different players for a touchdown this season and threw at least four touchdowns in three of his six starts.
“I couldn’t have done it without our fantastic offense,” Mendoza said following the win over Oregon. “They never said it was gonna be easy. We came in here, we handled adversity fantastically and we rose to the moment. When the offense is on the field and we need a game-winning drive, we did it. When the defense needed a stop, we did it.”
The offense hasn’t been Indiana‘s only strength this season. Its defense is allowing just 229 yards per game and 11.3 points per game. Just one team has compiled at least 300 yards of offense in a game against the Hoosiers this season, and that was Old Dominion (314) in the season opener. Last season, Cignetti’s defense held Michigan State to just 193 yards and 10 points.
Michigan State, which just hasn’t been the same program since its 11-2 campaign in 2021, has opened Big Ten play 0-3 after winning its first three games of the season. In Big Ten play, the Spartans are averaging just 277.3 yards and 23.6 points per game. These numbers have not resulted in a win against No. 25 USC, Nebraska or UCLA.
