Potential impact of Tony Grimes’ commitment

Tony Grimes’ commitment to MSU would immediately change the trajectory of the program. Before we jump into his impact on our program, it’s important to note that he has not officially committed to Michigan State yet. All signs are pointing that way, but it’s not over until it’s officially over.

The three crystal ball predictions do make me feel very confident, however. Two of them came from MSU insiders with the third coming from a national analyst. It’s always huge to get that prediction from a national analyst with no ties to MSU because they look at everything completely unbiased. Not that Spartan insiders are biased, but they want good things to happen to Michigan State.

If Grimes does commit to MSU, he will compete immediately for a starting spot. He is coming off an injury that saw him miss all of last season, so I won’t guarantee he is a starter. But if he is 100 percent healthy, I would guess he will become a starter and potential CB1.

Also, this commitment could lead to more future recruiting wins as well. Similarly to when Aidan Chiles chose Michigan State, Grimes’ commitment could have a domino effect. Good players like to play with other good players. So other recruits seeing an elite talent like Grimes choose MSU might cause them to give the Spartans another look.

Tony Grimes’ career

Grimes originally committed to North Carolina out of high school where he played three seasons. During his three seasons with the Tar Heels, Grimes totaled 97 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. He also added a forced fumble, sack, and interception as well.

After the 2022 season, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Texas A&M. He unfortunately never saw the field this past season as he suffered a lower-body injury before the year began.

Grimes then entered the transfer portal again on Dec. 1 and has taken one visit to East Lansing. As mentioned, all signs point towards a positive outcome for Michigan State football in this recruitment.

With the crystal balls coming in, I do expect this recruitment to become official soon. So stay tuned for some more good news (hopefully) soon.
