  • Michigan overwhelmed Washington at the line by rushing for over 300 yards and just under 9 yards per carry
  • Wolverines' secondary held Michael Penix and college football's No. 1 passing attack to 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, including Mike Sainristil's clincher

Michigan strikes first

Michigan played some bully ball on the opening possession, dictating terms at the line and posting over 7 yards per carry, culminating in Donovan Edwards running for a 41-yard touchdown and the early lead.

Injury trouble early

Washington running back Dillon Johnson took the Huskies' first play from scrimmage for a 6-yard run, but retreated to the medical tent immediately following. Johnson aggravated some long-standing knee and ankle issues in the Sugar Bowl and was pointing to his ankle in the national title game.

A dime

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy spotted Roman Wilson on this gainer that spliced up the Washington pass defense to set up what would be another score.

And another one

Edwards may not have received that much attention during the regular season, but the Michigan back made up for it in the biggest game of the year, giving UM the 14-3 lead after running for this 46-yard touchdown.

Blake Corum gets involved

The featured back in Michigan's offense took this carry for 59 yards in the second quarter, although the Wolverines' drive stalled and they took a 17-3 lead on a field goal.

4th and Wide

Facing a 4th & 7 from around midfield, Washington quarterback Michael Penix appeared to have Rome Odunze wide open for a touchdown, but the pass was just a bit outside.

Huskies punch it in

Aided by a crucial pass interference penalty, and after Michigan's offense slowed in the second quarter, Washington drove into scoring position and Penix hit Jalen McMillan on 4th & Goal to pull within 17-10.

Picked

With possession to open the second half, Penix threw his first pass right into the hands of Michigan defensive back Will Johnson on the plus-32.

Costly penalty

Just when it looked like the Washington had a big gain, after Penix connected with Odunze downfield, the stripes intervened and called a holding on the Huskies.

Corum strikes pay dirt

Five plays, 71 yards, and Blake Corum found the end zone for the first time to give the Wolverines a 27-13 lead in the fourth quarter.

The pick!

Facing a 4th & 13 and needing a touchdown, Penix launched one deep, but it landed in the hands of Michigan defensive back Mike Sainristil, a former wide receiver recruit, who ran the other way for 81 yards to put the Wolverines in scoring position.

Michigan seals it

Following the turnover, Corum finished the job by scoring his second touchdown of the night, one that helped Michigan win its first national championship since 1997.
