The Michigan Wolverines ' coaching staff has been reticent to completely turn the offense over to a ground-and-pound run-game oriented attack, citing their lack of availability (or ability) behind quarterback Bryce Underwood at the beginning of the season. With Mikey Keene recovering from injury and Jadyn Davis's lack of proven ability, keeping Underwood upright was their utmost priority.
However, through the last couple of games, Michigan has added a new dimension to their offense by taking advantage of Underwood's ability as a rusher . Underwood has averaged 7.7 yards a rush and is tied for second on the team in rushing touchdowns. Adding his athleticism to the mix has forced defenses to account for him on the ground, and it's opened up lanes for Justice Haynes to take advantage of when he gets the ball.
While Underwood's health is still Michigan's top priority, it sounds like head coach Sherrone Moore and his staff are finally ready to embrace doing whatever it takes to win-including taking advantage of Underwood as a rusher.
Speaking on his weekly 'Inside Michigan Football' Show, head coach Sherrone Moore outlined just what the Wolverines are embracing as they enter a critical stretch of their schedule against Wisconsin, USC, Washington, and Michigan State. One of those is a change in mentality in Underwood's play style, as they are now encouraging him to play "fast and loose" from now on.
"We’re going to let him play, and play free, and play loose, and have fun doing it. And he does that. Whenever he touches the football field or gets in the facility, there’s always a smile on his face, there’s always a glimmer in his eye of wanting to get better at football. He’s starting to do that even more and more. He’s got immense talent, and just excited for him to show it as we go through this season...I think the biggest thing that we look at as a staff is you want to win, so we have to do everything that we can in each game plan to win. And if sometimes it’s running him, we’ll run him. If it’s dropback pass and doing this and play-action pass … it’s whatever that recipe is for that game, we know we’ve got to go do to go win the game."
The Wolverines will have to prove they can do more than run the ball over this stretch of games, but what they are doing is working so far, as they've put up over a thousand yards of offense in the last two games and have scored 30+ points in back to back games for the first time since 2023. These numbers in the run game theoretically should open up the passing game as time goes on for Underwood, but Michigan has yet to capitalize through the air.
