The biggest day of Michigan football's 2024 recruiting cycle went largely according to plan. While fans held their breath waiting for five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood's signature, the nation's top prospect made it official on Wednesday evening, headlining a class that currently ranks seventh nationally.
Underwood, who stands at 6-foot-3.5 and 205 pounds, brings Vince Young-like potential to Ann Arbor. The comparisons to J.J. McCarthy are inevitable, but Underwood's ceiling might be even higher - we're talking potential No. 1 overall pick in three years.
The day wasn't without drama. Four-star tight end Andrew Olesh (ranked 56th overall) held off on signing, with Oregon and Penn State still in the mix. His decision, expected Friday, could give Michigan six top-100 commits if he sticks with the Wolverines.
Michigan added some impressive defensive talent, including four-star linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng (130th overall) and Kentucky pass rusher Travis Moten, who racked up 30 tackles for loss and 19.5 sacks his senior year. The secondary haul is particularly impressive, with five defensive backs ranked in the top 205.
But the Wolverines might not be done yet. Five-star offensive tackle Ty Haywood, previously committed to Alabama, remains in play. Landing Haywood alongside fellow five-star tackle Andrew Babalola would give Michigan three five-stars in one class - something they haven't done since McCarthy and Donovan Edwards in 2021.
With 21 players signed and more potentially on the way, Sherrone Moore's first full recruiting class is living up to expectations.
