Mizzou Head Coach Eli Drinkwitz Addresses QB Competition During SEC Media Days

For the sixth time in his tenure as the Missouri Tigers head coach, Eli Drinkwitz addressed the media Thursday morning as part of SEC Media Days from Atlanta.

Among the many topics he discussed, Drinkwitz gave an honest assessment of the team's lackluster offense in 2024. "Bottom line, last year, our offense wasn't fun," Drinkwitz said on SEC This Morning. "I mean, it was not fun to watch. It wasn't fun to be a part of. We weren't having fun. We were pressing too much."

With Brady Cook under center last season, Mizzou's offense averaged 389.5 yards per game, which ranked 11th among SEC programs. This season the Tigers will be issuing in a new quarterback. Who that is remains to be seen. Two-sport athlete Sam Horn, Penn State transfer Beau Pribula, and incoming freshman Matt Zollers are all in the running to lead Mizzou's offense this fall.

Despite being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this week, the hard-throwing pitcher Horn has made it clear he intends to compete for the starting QB position.

"Sam has been adamant this whole time to compete and win the job in the SEC, play quarterback at the highest level." Drinkwitz told reporters. "We had discussed it, Sam had relayed the message, his agent had relayed the message to all the baseball organizations that he was going to play football this fall. So nothing's changed."

As far as the QB competition itself, Drinkwitz broke down what each of the candidates bring to the table.

SAM HORN

"Obviously Sam Horn is a guy who has been in our system for a long time." Drinkwitz said. "Had an outstanding bowl prep, really good spring. Has really excelled in his maturation."

"One thing most people don't know about Sam, he's a type one diabetic. Since he's been in college, he's learned to adapt, train, develop, adjust. He's really done a lot of good things. Understands the system."

BEAU PRIBULA

"Beau came in with the right mindset. Nothing given, everything earned. Works extremely hard developing his craft. He's a guy who spends a lot of extra time up there. Has a chip on his shoulder, the right kind of chip. Does a good job leadership-wise. Worked with him a couple days at Harmons. Impressed with his ability to connect with our team."

MATT ZOLLERS

"Matt Zollers throws it as well as any quarterback I've ever seen. Coming back from an ankle surgery. You can tell he's adjusting to the speed of college football."

With players expected to report to fall camp at the end of this month, Drinkwitz and company are looking forward to a healthy competition for QB 1.

"Very excited about that room and know whoever ends up emerging as the quarterback is going to be in a really good position because he doesn't have to do it all by himself. He's going to have a really good defense. He's got a great supporting cast around him."
