Recruiting buzz around the LSU Tigers Football has sparked new conversations about how programs are adapting in this transfer portal era. And specifically how figures like Lane Kiffin have helped redefine roster-building altogether.

Speaking on Locked On LSU, Matt Moscona acknowledged that traditional recruiting cycles don’t carry the same energy they once did. With the transfer portal now a central tool for roster building, even elite programs like LSU are leaning heavily on experienced transfers.

“I understand in the portal era, recruiting, to some may feel muted.” He added that Kiffin’s self-described “Portal King” approach is likely to keep producing results, especially in the short term.

Now leading LSU, Kiffin brings a reputation for aggressively using the portal to quickly build competitive rosters. His philosophy has already influenced how LSU approaches roster construction, prioritizing proven college talent while still maintaining a presence in traditional recruiting pipelines.

Lane Kiffin’s Portal Strategy Meets LSU’s Long-Term Recruiting Vision

Despite the heavy reliance on the portal, Moscona believes the current imbalance won’t define the sport long-term. LSU’s recent cycles have leaned significantly toward transfers, but that trend may stabilize as programs reassess sustainability.

“I do think… as we go along… we’re going to see some bit of a revert to what was,” Moscona explained. “You’re going to see teams… try to build and develop where you can through the high school ranks.”

He clarified that a full return to the old model isn’t realistic. “I’m not saying we’re going to go back to the days where you’re signing 35 guys out of the high school ranks,” he said. “But I don’t think what we saw this past year… that’s going to happen again. I think you’re going to find a middle ground there.”

That balance is already showing signs in LSU’s current recruiting developments. During Moscona’s discussion with Shea Dixon, one of the biggest talking points was five-star linebacker Caden Henderson. Despite not listing LSU among his finalists weeks earlier, Henderson made a surprise official visit.

At the same time, top receiver Tristen Keys remains linked to LSU, pointing out that elite talent still plays a crucial role.
