The Tennessee Vols' expectations in 2024 are clear -- they plan to be one of the teams that reaches the new 12-team College Football Playoff next fall.
With a potential superstar quarterback in place in Nico Iamaleava and a loaded group of skill position players that includes running back Dylan Sampson, wide receivers Bru McCoy, Squirrel White, and transfer addition Chris Brazzell, it's safe to say that Tennessee has a great shot to reach their goal in 2024.
247Sports, however, isn't so sure.
They recently released their early 2024 bowl game projections and they don't have Tennessee making the 12-team playoff.
And not only do they have the Vols missing the playoff, but they have Tennessee playing in a bowl game that will elicit some eye rolls from Vol nation.
247Sports is predicting that Tennessee will play Washington in the Music City Bowl.
Oh boy.
If that's what happens, it would mean that Tennessee came up far short of their goals.
The Music City Bowl is pretty far down the list of marquee bowl games (and really, anything outside of making the playoff, unless Nico gets injured, would be a major letdown). And it's a bowl game that's provided some moments that Vol fans would like to forget (such as the 2010 Music City Bowl against North Carolina or the 2021 Music City Bowl against Purdue).

Obviously these predictions have no bearing on how things will actually play out in 2024. If anything, they can serve as bulletin board material for Tennessee. It's clear that the national media still doesn't have much confidence in the Vols despite the success they've experienced under Josh Heupel the last two seasons.
