One of the longest-tenured coaches in all of college football is out of a job.

NC State announced Saturday that head coach Dave Doeren has been fired. The move comes one day after the Wolfpack lost to Stanford to fall to 3-4 on the season.

In its statement, the school promised a “national search” for a new head coach.

Only three college football coaches have been in their role for longer than Doeren had. He had spent 14 years at NC State and helped build the program into a legitimate ACC contender. Though he never won the conference, he had 10 winning seasons and ensured the team finished the season ranked on three separate occasions, posting a 98-74 overall record during his tenure.

It was not that long ago that Doeren was being considered for some of college football’s most high-profile coaching jobs. The 54-year-old should land on his feet given his reputation, though he probably won’t be getting looks at those types of jobs again anytime soon.
