NCAAF Betting: A look at the championship odds

Georgia has won back-to-back titles and is the favorite right now at +220. Something has to give though because no team has won three titles in a row since the 1930s. Now that is not enough reason to fade the Dawgs but it does provide some historical context. Lots of great programs have not won three championships in a row.

For this upcoming season, we are still locked into the four-team college football playoff. I am not sure whether that makes the Bulldogs' chances easier or harder than the teams in this situation in the past. On the one hand, they have to win a couple of playoff games (in which they would probably be favored) and on the other, they can probably survive a regular-season loss (which would have killed the chance of previous champs).

Right now we know a fair bit about what the teams are going to look like when the season starts in August so it is as good a time as any to highlight a few teams where there might be some value (or not).

NCAAF Title Odds — Spring Look

Ohio State Buckeyes +600

Normally I am trying to guide you toward a specific wager (it is just more fun), explaining its value, but with Ohio State, I am looking to fade them this season. Sure, they probably have one of the most talented rosters in the country (on paper) but having the best receiver in the nation only gets you so far in terms of winning it all. They are breaking in a new quarterback this season as they try and reel Michigan back in. Big Blue and Penn State look just as good but with better payoffs to win it all this season.

USC Trojans +1600

The Pac-12 is going to be really good this season. I know they are getting "punked" for all of their administrative ineptitude but on the field, they might be better than they have been in a while. USC should be the best of the bunch and has more defense to balance one of the best offenses in the country. Is it too soon for Lincoln Riley to get his first title? Maybe, but that is hardly enough of a reason to not like USC. Their schedule is such that a loss is not going to eliminate them either.

LSU Tigers +1600

Georgia and Alabama have become so dominant nationally that sometimes we forget about LSU, who won the national title not that long ago. They are in the second year with head coach Brian Kelly and have more certainty than either of the aforementioned programs at quarterback with the very experienced Jayden Daniels. The key game is a trip to Alabama in early November. If they can win that one it likely means an SEC West title and a trip to the playoffs. Given what you have to pay for the likes of the Dawgs and the Crimson Tide, this is a good value spec play that you might be even able to buy out of if the Tigers look strong in their opener against Florida State.
