Easily the highest-profile game of Week 1, for many reasons. Not only do we have a couple of Top 10 teams, but ones that met last season in a game that was decided by a single point. Florida State won in case you forgot. Either side could use this one as a springboard to a memorable season, but who is the right pick?
LSU Tigers vs. Florida State Seminoles Betting Trends and Odds
Sunday, September 3, 2023 - 7:30 p.m. ET
Odds: LSU -2.5, Over/under 56.5, LSU -150 | Florida State +110
Even if these teams were not good this season this matchup would generate a lot of interest, just based on last year's close win and the brands involved. However, either of these teams could be in the playoffs, maybe both depending on how each team shows in their first game of the season. Both have all the pieces on both sides of the ball, even if they might not be the favorites in their respective leagues right now. If you like ACC vs. SEC, this is the best you are going to get this season.
Picks for LSU vs. Florida State
LSU -2.5, Race to 25 Points - LSU (+125)
This game should be closely contested throughout. I am leaning toward the Tigers because I have more confidence in their coach (Brian Kelly) and quarterback (Jayden Daniels). Those are slight advantages for a game that is probably won by the team that looks most ready to start the season. This year, LSU can win the turnover battle and get the victory (and the spoils) as well.
I was tempted to go with a halftime, full-time bet on LSU (+145), but landed on the first to 25 points instead (a lower payoff but not as closely correlated with the side play). Last year neither team made it to this total, but I expect the offenses to be sharper than they were a year ago. A 31-24 final score feels right.
It is hard to see this line moving much, especially from the key number it is at right now. There is likely to be divided support on this heavyweight battle.
