NCAAF Week 5 best bets: Jayhawks seek redemption vs. Longhorns

Last week we had a bevy of big games, but this week is more reserved. We are getting into the meat of conference play ... and I love it (we are getting better results, too). If you see below, we had a good week last week.  Our only loss?  Iowa. I mean, who knew the Hawkeyes would get shut out?  I guess everyone, I just didn't think they would totally flame out. Lesson learned, hopefully.

Last week: 3-1-1
Season to Date: 10-9-1

NCAAF Week 5 Best Bets

Florida @ Kentucky
Wildcats -1

This line is indicative of the way things have changed for the Gators over the last few years. This used to be a game where they would be favored by 20+ and win by more, but right now the Kentucky program is in better shape. I trust their coach and quarterback more and that is enough to back the Wildcats at home.

This one is probably not going to move much either way and an ML play is strong if it flips to UK being a small underdog.

South Alabama @ James Madison
Dukes -3

The JMU coach got some pub last week for his phone antics on the sideline but that should not take away from them being a solid club. It was great for the program overall, but I am not putting too much stock into that South Alabama win at Oklahoma State. Getting the better team at home with only a FG to cover is good value.

Sitting on the key number this one is unlikely to move. It is perfect for teasers and ML parlays too.

Arizona State @ Cal
Sun Devils +12.5

These teams have not met since before the pandemic. Cal has been a little better than expected so far, but I am having a hard time believing they are basically two TDs better than the Sun Devils. Arizona State was able to have a little success on offense last week against USC and that is all they need to do against a much weaker Cal team.

This is a good number to take the Devils with because you get a little extra latitude with the Bears needing to win by at least a couple of majors.

Kansas @ Texas
Jayhawks +16.5

There is no doubt Texas is the better team. Quarterback Quinn Ewers is the better NFL prospect but Jalon Daniels is just the kind of playmaker that thrives in college and he is having a great season. I am not sure he can lead Kansas all the way to an upset, but he can put some pressure on a Texas team that has to be looking past KU. The Jayhawks are looking for redemption from last year.

I like this line and apparently others do too because it is creeping down. Don't wait till game time it might not be over 14.

West Virginia @ TCU
Mountaineers +14

The Mountaineers are off to a good start. They are not a playoff contender but wins over Pitt and Texas Tech have given the coach some breathing room. I like the way they are running the ball this season. That and solid defense gives them a chance to keep things close and maybe win late. The Horned Frogs are not going to dominate them.

Make sure you get the full 14 points, otherwise, you might want to take a pass or tease it.
