Nebraska official: Big Ten decision coming Tuesday

A Nebraska official was caught on a hot mic saying that the Big Ten will announce its decision regarding the college football season Tuesday, just two days after Big Ten presidents met to discuss the current status of the season.

University of Nebraska system president Ted Carter was talking to Bob Hinson, director of the National Strategic Research Institute, before a press conference when he was heard discussing the announcement.

"We're getting ready to announce the Huskers and Big Ten football tonight," Carter told Hinson

"Oh, really?" Hinson responded. "I heard that that was happening. There's a lot of anticipation about that. Good for you. Maybe that will get off your plate."

"Well, it never will, but it's a good move in the right direction," Carter said.

The Big Ten was one of several conferences that postponed fall sports indefinitely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With other conferences beginning their seasons, there has been growing pressure on the Big Ten to set a start date for the season. Wisconsin chancellor Rebecca Blank said on Monday that the Big Ten would "move forward together" with whatever decision is made.

"This isn't going to be a school-by-school thing," Blank said.

There were rumors that the season could start on Oct. 10, but Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos seemed to shut those reports down, saying "There's nothing to that."

However, with an announcement apparently coming Tuesday, we may discover that Moos didn't want to reveal anything before an official start date was set.
