New report details where former Tennessee Vols QB Harrison Bailey stands on the Florida Gators' depth chart
Matt Pendleton / USA TODAY NETWORK

In what was one of the most surprising moves of the offseason, former Tennessee Vols quarterback Harrison Bailey transferred to his fourth school when he landed with the Florida Gators in January.

Bailey, a former four-star recruit from Marietta, GA, spent the first two seasons of his career at Tennessee. He played under Jeremy Pruitt as a true freshman in 2020 before playing under Josh Heupel as a sophomore. Bailey transferred to UNLV ahead of the 2022 season. After one season in Las Vegas, Bailey transferred to Louisville, where he spent the last two seasons before arriving in Gainesville.

“I think we wanted to add a player that has some experience, that played in games, he kind of fit that profile,” said Florida head coach Billy Napier earlier this year of adding Bailey. “I think Harrison has played a lot of football, he’s prepared as a starter or backup a lot of weeks, so I think he’s played in some good systems, there’s a ton of carry over there, and the guy spins the ball well. He’s an athlete, intelligent, quarterback that’s got a good pedigree. He’s a good add to the team.”

Florida added Bailey to the roster as depth, but he could actually end up playing in an important role for the Gators in the fall.

Gators Online reported this week that Bailey is believed (for now) to be the No. 2 quarterback on Florida's depth chart behind starter DJ Lagway.

"If the Florida Gators had a game today and Lagway wasn’t ready to go, one source told us they believe Louisville transfer Harrison Bailey would be next in line, followed by redshirt sophomore Aidan Warner and then true freshman Tramell Jones," wrote Keith Niebuhr. "Again that’s as of right now. The same person noted that Warner 'certainly has improved.'"

Lagway has been sidelined during much of fall camp as he works his way back from a calf injury. The talented quarterback didn't participate in Florida's recent scrimmage, but he's continuing to do more during practice.

“He had a great day,” said Napier of Lagway on Monday. “Think he had his best day today. He took more reps today than he’s been taking. Obviously, he didn’t participate in the scrimmage, but he’s hitting all his numbers from a throw perspective. The ball is coming out of his hand with more velocity than anytime in his career...We’re working on soft tissue with the calf and we’re going to execute our plan there. So, he’ll be modified for awhile.”

It's unclear if Lagway will be ready to go for Florida's season-opener on August 30 against Long Island University. If he's not ready to go, it could be Bailey that gets the start for the Gators in the opener.
