NFL teams are reportedly looking into a fatal 2024 car accident involving Miami Hurricanes defensive end and 2026 draft prospect Rueben Bain Jr.

Rueben Bain Jr. is considered one of the elite prospects of the 2026 NFL Draft. Widely expected to be a top-five pick, Bain logged 9.5 sacks. a forced fumble and one interception last season.

However, a new development could see Bain fall in the draft.

According to Oliver Connolly of The Read Optional, Bain was involved in a fatal car accident on March 17, 2024, in Miami. For some reason, Bain’s involvement in the accident had not been reported on until now.

Bain’s vehicle crashed into another car and careered into concrete barriers. One of the passengers in his vehicle, 22-year-old Destiny Betts, went into a coma and later died in the hospital three months later:

“One of four passengers in Bain’s car, Destiny Betts, a 22-year-old college student from Georgia who was visiting Miami for spring break, suffered incapacitating injuries and was rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center from the scene. She never regained consciousness. Betts died on 13 June 2024, after spending almost three months in a coma. A second passenger was hospitalized with injuries.

Two other University of Miami players were in the car at the time of the crash — linebacker Wesley Bissainthe and Nyjalik Kelly (who later transferred to UCF), both teammates of Bain at Miami and both eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft.

The police crash report states that Bain “operated his vehicle in a careless or negligent manner.” Following the collision with the second vehicle, Bain’s car — owned by a company named Miami Sports 27 Inc — struck the east concrete wall before being redirected into the west concrete wall, where it came to rest. It was later towed after sustaining disabling damage…

Multiple league sources confirmed they are aware of the incident and are continuing to investigate. It remains unclear if it will affect Bain’s draft position.”

Per Connolly, a careless driving charge against Bain Jr. was eventually dismissed.

Connolly spoke to multiple NFL executives about their takes on Bain Jr. One NFL source said that he feels like Laremy Tunsil “all over again,” and that the Miami product hasn’t “been transparent with us.”

Tunsil fell to the Miami Dolphins at No. 13 in the 2016 NFL Draft. This came minutes after a video surfaced of him smoking from a bong with a gas mask on. Of course, Tunsil has gone on to cement himself as one of the best offensive tackles of this era.

“We are concerned about multiple incidents,” another executive told Connolly about Bain Jr.. “We are waiting for the other shoe.”
