You can add Abdul Carter to the list of players who received prank phone calls during the 2025 NFL Draft.
Carter, a star pass rusher out of Penn State, was selected with the No. 3 pick by the New York Giants last Thursday night. It was not a surprising move at all, as Carter had hinted he was New York-bound in the days leading up to the draft, and most NFL analysts projected the Giants would select the outside linebacker.
However, apparently a prankster tried to convince Carter he was heading to the Jacksonville Jaguars with the second overall selection. According to Carter's agent Drew Rosenhaus, the unanimous All-American and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year was another one of the draft prospects who targeted by a crank caller.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that someone pranked Carter, calling him and saying they were with the Jaguars and were about to pick him at No. 2.
"It’s unfortunate that these private numbers are getting to the people making the prank calls," Carter's agent Drew Rosenhaus told Schefter. “Abdul and I knew it was bs and didn’t even tell his family about the call.”
By our count, this is now two top-five picks who received prank calls. Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham, who was picked fifth overall by the Cleveland Browns, was also victimized.
The most well-publicized prank call of the weekend went to Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders on Friday night as his draft slide continued. It was revealed on Sunday that Jax Ulbrich, the 21-year-old son of Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator, had obtained Sanders' number and was behind the call.
Ulbrich apologized, but the NFL still docked the Falcons $250,000 and his father $100,000 in fines as punishment.
We're going to guess the league is going to make eliminating these security breaches a major part of next year's draft leadup.
