The No. 7 Texas Longhorns rebounded in style Saturday – cruising to a 38-7 victory over San José State to even the season record at 1-1. First-year starter Arch Manning led the way – delivering a dominant performance with 295 passing yards, four touchdowns, and an impressive 20-yard rushing touchdown in the second half.

On the ground, CJ Baxter ran the football 13 times for 64 yards as Texas ran for a total of 155 yards. Through the air, Parker Livingstone had another breakout performance for the wide receiver room – hauling in four passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, the Texas defense held the Spartans to 273 total yards and just 85 on the ground – averaging 3.8 yards per play.

Parker Livingstone was the leader Saturday for Texas.

As defenses will focus on Ryan Wingo and DeAndre Moore, Livingstone will be counted on more and more moving forward. And through two games, he appears to be answering the bell. His 83-yard touchdown was the longest for the Longhorns since 2017.

Speaking of stepping up, tight end Jack Endries stepped up as well – catching two touchdown passes. The Cal transfer tight end looked like the dynamic addition he was billed to be Saturday. He was a mismatch in the open field and adds a dynamic element to the offense for a first-year quarterback.

"His [Livingstone's] connection with Arch, they're roommates, and I think that goes a long, long way. That's really underrated in football. You'll see all the best players are close with their quarterbacks or whatever," Endries said. "A lot of people don't think about that, but it's real, and it's huge. And a kid who works that hard and puts himself in the right spots, he's gonna get the ball, and Arch is looking his way."

The aforementioned Moore and Wingo combined for eight catches for 60 yards.

Defensively, Texas forced four turnovers – dominating the trenches.

All-American safety Michael Taaffe led the way with seven tackles and linebackers Ty’Anthony Smith and Anthony Hill Jr., each logged six tackles. Smith forced and recovered a fumble while also recording a tackle for loss Saturday. Pete Kwiatkowski seemed to like what he saw from Smith and he brings another physical presence to the second level for the Longhorns.

“(Smith) is becoming a player that can't be taken off the field,” a source tells Geoff Ketchum of Orangebloods.

However, the Longhorns’ discipline still needs sharpen up for SEC play in a few weeks. Texas was flagged 12 times for 115 yards – negating big plays and disrupting momentum. The Florida Gators are lingering in a few weeks so if Texas is going to improve to 1-0 in the Southeastern Conference, Steve Sarkisian's group needs to shore up the little things.

"In camp, we already knew what kind of defense we were going to have during the season - a great defense. They fly around, create turnovers," Baxter said about the Texas defense. "That was their challenge coming into the game, and they exceeded that challenge.

"And Anthony Hill – going up against him in practice – you know what he brings. Me and him coming in [to Texas] together, both being highly recruited guys, we've challenged each other since we've been here. We still do. He makes me better. I make him better, and that's all I can ask for."

Arch Manning had a great statistically, but still expects more.

"A lot to work on. I thought it was sloppy on my part. You can't turn the ball over in the red area. I kind of made some throws where the defense had a chance to make a pick, which they didn't. So, got to play better. I think all around it was a little sloppy."

Speaking of Manning, a lot was made about him skipping a throw at Wingo's feet and appearing to be in pain. He quickly shot down rumors of an injury.

"No, no, I got to make that throw. He was open. Ran a good route. So gotta make that throw."

Sarkisian also touched on the speculation, "I don't know. News to me."
