These things don’t always work. Bill Walsh had a great 1992 season at Stanford and then went 7-14 over his last two seasons.
Lovie Smith struggled at Illinois, Chip Kelly fought the good fight at UCLA, Dave Wannstedt was just okay at Pitt, and there’s a Mike Riley here, and a Bill Callahan there, who went from being an NFL head coach to the unrelenting life of a college head man.
It’s hard to go from movies to TV, and Belichick going to North Carolina is like Leonardo DiCaprio starring in CSI: Charlotte.
But the game has changed, and the world has changed. NFL head coaches have become relatively cookie-cutter - seriously, off the top of your head, name all 32 of them - the star power is in the college ranks now, and there’s something these coaches like about being able to control everything in their world.

None of the girlfriend stuff matters. Nothing outside of Belichick trying to win games at North Carolina matters.
It’s a program that’s enjoyed one double-digit win season since 1997. It’s a basketball school, but so what? So is Florida. So is Auburn.
It’s possible to get good players to come to Chapel Hill, and going to a bowl game every year is a given. It’s up to Belichick to do one thing, his job.
Bill Belichick’s job is to coach football. Watch North Carolina be better now.
