Notre Dame beats out contenders for four-star WR recruit

Star wide receiver Micah Gilbert has decided to join the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a commitment that can only be seen as a surprising win for head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff.

You see, Gilbert is from Charlotte, North Carolina, and he possesses an offer from the North Carolina Tar Heels. Their campus is just a two-hour drive away from Gilbert's high school.

The four-star wideout also has an offer from Duke, and that must have been an extremely intriguing one considering the fact that his older brother, Mark Gilbert, played cornerback for the Blue Devils. Speaking of former players, Gilbert's cousin, former NFL superstar cornerback Darrelle Revis, played at Pitt, and you guessed it, the Panthers had offered.

Joining UNC, Duke and Pitt on Gilbert's finalist list were South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Jim Harbaugh's Michigan Wolverines.

Freeman, wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey (Gilbert's primary recruiter) and the Fighting Irish beat out all that competition for the highly thought-of recruit.

According to 247Sports, Gilbert is the No. 30 overall wide receiver recruit in the 2024 class as well as a top-200 player nationally. He's already 6-foot-3, 203 pounds as a rising-senior.

During the 2022 season, Gilbert racked up 39 catches for 486 yards and six touchdowns, per 247Sports. Although, he was sidelined toward the end of the season with a wrist injury, limiting him to seven games.
