The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have had a great offseason so far. The biggest prize was landing former Duke Blue Devils quarterback Riley Leonard who is a perfect replacement for Sam Hartman . Now, another former Blue Devil is coming to South Bend. Edge rusher RJ Oben has committed to the Fighting Irish for 2024.

Oben has been a very productive member of the Blue Devils’ defense in the past three seasons. In that time, he has racked up 62 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks. When you look at the advanced state, Oben is highly productive in pressuring the quarterback and causing quicker or more errant throws. This is exactly what the Fighting Irish defense needed. While they have a bunch of young pass-rushers, Oben brings a veteran presence that should help anchor the unit.
Outside of Oben and Leonard, head coach Marcus Freeman has landed a couple of high-quality receivers in the transfer portal. The Fighting Irish had a fine team but lacked the juice to really compete with the elite teams of college football. They are hoping to make some noise in 2024. The college football landscape is changing and Notre Dame is staying independent as of this moment. It will be interesting to see if this conference realignment causes them to join a conference down the road.
It is still early in the offseason meaning that Freeman could continue to land talent out of the portal. It will be interesting to see if more players flood South Bend with all the positive buzz around the program.
