Notre Dame QB's mom assists in making necklace out of removed body part

Notre Dame transfer Sam Hartman is having a necklace made out of his surgically removed rib with a little help from his mother.

The timeline means that the former Wake Forest quarterback could have his new piece of jewelry in time for his debut with the Fighting Irish against Navy on Aug. 26.

Ahead of his redshirt junior season with the Demon Deacons, it was reported that Hartman would be out indefinitely with a non-football-related medical condition. It was then revealed in early September that he had developed a blood clot, but after missing the first game of the campaign, Hartman returned for the team's second contest against Vanderbilt. When he came back, the school revealed that Hartman had Paget-Schroetter syndrome, a blood clot that often is linked to repeated strenuous activity.

According to David Ubben of The Athletic, Lisa Hartman still remembers her son asking surgeons if he could keep his rib following the procedure last year.

"He wanted to make a necklace out of it, like a shark’s tooth. The surgeons looked at each other and tentatively agreed. Lisa Hartman didn’t think much of the request at the time, figuring her son, then at Wake Forest, was half-joking," Ubben wrote.

"'I should have known he was going to stick with it, and I would get brought into this whole thing," Lisa said, via Ubben.

Per the report, the ACC's all-time leader in touchdown passes (110) underwent two surgeries to "get rid of a blood clot, clean up the tissue and, yes, remove his highest rib near his collarbone so the blood vessels would have more space and to prevent future clotting."

Ubben added that during his fifth and final season with Wake Forest, the rib "lived in his refrigerator." When the 23-year-old transferred to Notre Dame, the rib moved locations as well, going to his parents' fridge, where his mother "began the process of making it into a necklace."

During an appearance on "The Paul Finebaum Show" on Thursday, Hartman updated fans on the situation.

The rib is "around two inches long and one inch wide," per Ubben, and once Lisa was given the responsibility of holding onto it, her quarterback son told her to take caution and not "end up on an FBI watch list."

She was thorough in her research and preparation though, purchasing a "special bio enzyme laundry detergent to clean the rib" and finding a "special type of peroxide that’s around 20 to 30 percent stronger than what can be bought in a store." Her son's rib reportedly had to be "soaked in both for around 24 hours multiple times so it wouldn’t rot," but she was up to the task.

"He means the world to me, so if he wants me to clean the flesh off of his ribs, then that’s what I’m gonna do," Lisa said.

The fun wasn't done there, as she then ordered some "puka shells from Hawaii" and bought a "special drill with a bit small enough to drill through the bone so it can be attached to the necklace."

This isn't the first time this year that an athlete has made headlines involving a unique piece of jewelry.

In June, at the request of his mom, New York Yankees outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera sported a necklace with his grandmother's tooth fastened to a clasp attached to it.

Notre Dame fans will be on the lookout this fall to see if their new signal-caller is showing up his new necklace, but according to Ubben's report, Hartman doesn't plan on wearing it often and primarily wants to hang it on the wall in his home.
