As Notre Dame prepares for the Sugar Bowl this Wednesday, the Fighting Irish became the subject of transfer recruiting rumors on Sunday.
The last two years, Notre Dame has landed quarterbacks Sam Hartman and Riley Leonard in the transfer portal. In 2021, they added Jack Coan as a one-year rental. Considering Leonard's eligibility is up after this season, some assumed the Irish would dip back into the portal for a QB for 2025, and there were whispers on social media today that they'd be doing just that.
Not true, according to Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong of On3 Sports. A new report from On3 says Notre Dame will not be seeking additional QB help from the portal.
Rivals.com's Adam Gorney also reported that the Irish are not seeking a transfer signal caller.
It looks like Notre Dame likes what it has in Steve Angeli, who has been the team's primary backup the last two years and started in the Sun Bowl last season, as well as young QBs Kenny Minchey and C.J. Carr. The Fighting Irish also signed four-star Blake Hebert in the 2025 cycle.
Leonard, who transferred to ND after a stellar career at Duke, has completed 66.8% of his passes for 2,293 yards, 17 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He's also rushed for 751 yards and 15 touchdowns, the latter number a single-season record for a Notre Dame quarterback.
Leonard threw for 201 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score in Notre Dame's 27-17 win over Indiana in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Dec. 20. The win moved the Irish into the quarterfinals, where they will face Georgia on Wednesday in New Orleans.
Notre Dame and Georgia will kick off in the Sugar Bowl at 8:45 p.m. ET Wednesday night on ESPN.
