Notre Dame has advanced to the second round after beating the Indiana Hoosiers in the first round of the College Football Playoffs. The Irish will take on the No. 2 seeded Georgia Bulldogs in New Orleans in the Sugar Bowl on New Years Day.

This is a tale of two different programs from the past five years. Notre Dame has been battling it's way back to glory, and is coming off of their best post season win since 1993 while Georgia is trying to remain the top dog and the team to beat in College Football. Both programs are known for their historic football programs, which comes with a lot of recruiting buzz to boot.

One of the bigger narratives in this game is Georgia, who is known for attracting the cream of the crop recruits, while Notre Dame is on the outside looking in when receiving five-star caliber commitments.

Let's take a look at their recruiting comparison, using the On3 Consensus rankings to compare.

Notre Dame Offense vs Georgia Defense

Notre Dame has eight four-stars, two three-stars, and an unranked player in their starting lineup. Georgia has three five-star players, six four star players, and one unranked player in the projected starting line up for the Sugar Bowl.

The Irish have ten players who were Top 300 recruits coming out of high school between their starters and reserves which include running back Jeremiyah Love (No. 77), wide receiver Beaux Collins (No. 97), wide receiver Jaden Greathouse (No. 158), left tackle Anthonie Knapp (No. 265), left guard Billy Schrauth (No. 127), right guard Rocco Spindler (No. 65), right tackle Aamil Wagner (No. 80), running back Jadarian Price (No. 212), and tight end Eli Raridon (No. 139).

Nine of Georgia's starters are former Top 300 recruits with seven of them being former Top 100 recruits. Defensive end Mykel Williams (No. 6), linebacker CJ Allen (No. 76), line backer Smael Mondon (No. 27), nickel corner Joenel Aguero (No. 47), cornerback Julian Humphrey (No. 82), cornerback Daylen Everette (No. 33), and safety Malaki Starks (No. 10) all ranked within the Top 100 coming out of high school.

On paper, this matchup favors the Georgia defense who have the higher caliber recruits. The Bulldogs boast three five star players in their projected starting line up and three fiver star players in their reserves while the Irish don't have any former five star players in their projected starting line up. Notre Dame has four former Top 100 recruits between their starters and reserve players while Georgia has 11.

Notre Dame Defense vs Georgia Offense

Notre Dame has eight four-star players and three three-star players in their projected starting lineup. Georgia has ten four-star players and one three star player in their projected starting line up.

This matchup is significantly more even than on the offensive side of the ball with the Irish having five starters and six reserves ranked as former Top 300 recruits highlighted by linebacker Drayk Bowen (No. 103), cornerback Christian Gray (No. 112), defensive end Joshua Burnham (No. 108), defensive end Bryce Young (No. 56), linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa (No. 42), and linebacker Jaylen Sneed (No. 35).

Georgia has ten starters and three reserve players ranked as former Top 300 recruits highlighted by quarterback Gunnar Stockton (No. 149) who is stepping in for the injured Carson Beck, wide receiver Arian Smith (No. 80), tight end Oscar Delp (No. 83), left tackle Monroe Freeling (No. 32) and running backs Trevor Etienne (No. 286) and Nate Frazier (No. 49).

Ranking wise, this matchup is relatively even, with a slight edge towards Georgia with them having a slightly higher number of Top 300 recruits between starters and their reserve players. They also have two more four-star players in their starting line up with ten compared to Notre Dame's eight.

Looking at this matchup as a whole, the Bulldogs hold the advantage. Year in and year out, their recruiting higher ranked players than Notre Dame. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Irish have been closing the gap since he took over in South Bend. Can this be the game that changes the narrative and moves Notre Dame closer to recruiting those five-star caliber players?
