Saturday night is going to be a very interesting one with the Ohio State Buckeyes opening up their Big Ten home schedule against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
After an easy 24-6 win over the Washington Huskies, they have a different challenge with P.J. Fleck's team led by redshirt freshman quarterback Drake Lindsey. They also have stud safety Koi Perich, who nearly committed to the Buckeyes, but stayed with his hometown team.
Ahead of the game, I spoke with A to Z Ohio State beat writer Brandon Little to get a sense for what is going on with the Buckeyes ahead of a very interesting Big Ten matchup.
The feeling in Columbus is very positive around the first-year starting quarterback for the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s offense is under first-year play calling with Brian Hartline and the Buckeyes are playing at the slowest pace they’ve played at with Ryan Day and that’s by design. Day has been open about the offense limiting plays for the benefit down the road with the expanded College Football Playoff.
Ohio State’s offense since Ryan Day arrived has gradually played slower even if the last 2 years are more drastic.

Why?
“A short-term goal of winning, and then you have to look at it from a wide lens of where we need to be at the end of the season”https://t.co/p63r6qjl40 pic.twitter.com/5vIRAoTov6
One of the concerns with Sayin has been the fact that the Buckeyes are not throwing down the field a ton. Day has been vocal about the offense playing carefully and I believe it has everything to do with an elite defense on the other side of the football. When it starts to matter a lot more into November and December, expect things to be opened up like last year.
Ohio State’s offense moves best through their wideouts and they haven’t been able to quite unlock Max Klare yet this season, though he started to show what he could do last week with a nice 18-yard gain. Ohio State’s best part of the run game has been freshman Bo Jackson and he’s gone over 80 yards rushing in the last three games.
Jackson started the season as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart but has had more touches than both CJ Donaldson and James Peoples the last three weeks. On the road against Washington, the Buckeyes went with Jackson and Donaldson mainly and that looks to be their best pair of running backs. Ohio State doesn’t have the run game they had last year with Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson but Jackson has shown home run ability already and that can open a lot for this offense as the season goes on.
In terms of the most well-rounded player who can do the most for the defense, Reese is definitely that. There isn’t a thing that Reese can’t be asked to do for the Browns defense and that is pretty special. The Cleveland product can be a thumper from the linebackers proposition or drop in coverage. Rushing the passer is no problem and that may be the highest ceiling area of his game.
While Caleb Downs is the smartest player on Ohio State’s roster with his football IQ, there isn’t a player who offers a higher fielding as a football player than Reese at the next level due to the things he’s capable of.
Ohio State started slow on offense and missed out on points early against Washington due to a special teams fumble that had them set up in Huskies’ territory. The Buckeyes can’t start slow at home offensively and I don’t believe they will. As long as the defense avoids giving up the big play that can pop up every once in a while, Ohio State will grab another Big Ten win comfortably.
