The Ohio State Buckeyes will once again carry high expectations into the 2025 season — as they always do. Winning one National Championship only means the Buckeyes will be expected to try and do it again.

Ohio State finds itself in the midst of another quarterback battle, a recurring theme under head coach Ryan Day it almost seems. Sophomore and former Alabama transfer Julian Sayin is competing with junior Lincoln Kienholz for the starting job.

Throughout the spring, the two quarterbacks were fairly even in the competition. However, Sayin finished the spring on a strong note with an impressive performance in the spring game. Now, it appears there’s even more encouraging news surrounding him.

Ohio State insider provides promising update on QB Julian Sayin

According to Lettermen Row, Sayin has had a strong summer since spring practice ended — and has even made a noticeable change to his physique.

“That sentiment has continued into the summer, with the spring game really propelling the second-year signal-caller’s confidence in commanding the offense and winning the job. This battle is still technically open, and I expect it to be for about two weeks into fall camp, but it would be very surprising if Sayin isn’t named QB1. On top of continued command of the offense and faster decision-making, I’m also told Sayin is noticeably bigger versus last season, working hard in the weight room throughout the offseason.” — Alex Gleitman, Lettermen Row

A full year in the Ohio State weight program has clearly paid off for Sayin, who is listed at 6-foot-1 and 203 pounds. As a true freshman, he attempted just 12 passes in limited action. The California native is known for his extremely quick release — one that not many quarterbacks have.

Kienholz, meanwhile, is a player who has paid his dues in the system and continues to improve. He won’t go down without a fight in this quarterback battle, but it would be a surprise if talent doesn’t win out and Sayin isn’t the starter when the Buckeyes host Texas in Week 1.
