Jeremiah Smith was a different kind of freshman for the Ohio State Buckeyes last season with the way he exploded onto the scene. From the start, Smith was the focal point of the offense, and the Buckeyes rolled all year—until they didn’t, when Michigan once again stood in the way.
A fourth straight loss to the Wolverines remains the lone black mark on Ryan Day’s tenure. That defeat also stuck with Smith, who made it clear he didn’t come to Ohio State to lose to Michigan.
“I’m not a sore loser, but I hate losing, and losing to that team up north was pretty crazy,” Smith told The Athletic in early July. “In the end, I think it really helped us play the way we did in the playoffs. But I didn’t want to go to Ohio State and lose to That Team Up North. I just hate them. Just something about them. For the next two years, I promise you, I will not lose to them. I can’t lose to them in the next two years.”
Smith later appeared on Urban Meyer’s The Triple Option podcast, where he was asked how he truly felt about the Wolverines. His answer was blunt.
“Hate,” Smith said. “You know. With everything in me, I hate them.”
Smith scored Ohio State’s only touchdown in last year’s 13–10 loss to Michigan, finishing with five catches for 35 yards. This season, he’ll not only look to put up bigger numbers but, more importantly, finally get that win against the Wolverines.
The Buckeyes’ star wideout hasn’t been shy about speaking out against Michigan, and based on what he’s shown so far, there’s little reason to believe he won’t back it up.
