When you talk about preseason hype, Michigan freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood arrived in Ann Arbor with some extremely high expectations. Viewed as a five-star player and the top overall player in the 2025 recruiting class, a lot was discussed when the Wolverines made an aggressive NIL offer for Underwood to flip from his commitment to the LSU Tigers. Keeping the Michigan native at home was a top priority.
Underwood had an impressive beginning to his career in Ann Arbor this past weekend against New Mexico, completing 21 of 32 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown. While that stat line isn’t incredible, the film for the 6-4, 228-pound passer was that of a future elite signal caller. He now heads into Week Two against the Oklahoma Sooners, and many are excited to see what type of performance he can put together.
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables is probably a little less excited about Underwood, at least while he has to game plan against him this weekend. During media availability this week, Coach Venables spoke about the talented signal caller for the Sooners' upcoming matchup with the Wolverines. He gave him quite the compliment.
#Sooners HC Brent Venables: "Really, you look at the team... He's a little different, reminds me a lot of Trevor Lawrence. There's a reason he was the No. 1 player in America. So, really, we look at what it's going to take to win."

On how to prepare for true freshman QB
"Really, you look at the team... He's a little different, reminds me a lot of Trevor Lawrence," Venables said. "There's a reason he was the No. 1 player in America. So, really, we look at what it's going to take to win."
For those who remember Lawrence coming out of Cartersville High School in the 2018 recruiting class, he was considered a generational talent, and he was. During his three years with the Clemson program, Lawrence managed to throw for 10,098 yards and 90 touchdowns, while also adding another 943 yards and 18 scores on the ground. Lawrence led the Tigers to a National Championship during the 2018 season, and was eventually selected with the first overall selection by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Coach Venables making the comparison to Lawrence means something for Underwood, especially since he coached Lawrence while he was the defensive coordinator for Clemson. Physically, there are definitely some parallels to consider. Underwood is also a tall, lanky quarterback who is stronger than some defenders would guess. His arm talent is special, but Underwood is also a more dynamic athlete than you may expect. Just like Lawrence is.
Before Underwood leaves Ann Arbor, there is a very good chance that he ends up being a phenomenal football player for the Wolverines. For Venables' sake, as well as his team, I am sure they hope that they don't see the best version of Underwood this Saturday. Oklahoma will be hosting Michigan in Norman, and will want to continue trending upward in a make-or-break season for Coach Venables.
While the Michigan offense is built off of the run game, the ability that Underwood brings is the ultimate X factor for this team. Depending on how Underwood performs will determine if the Wolverines will be able to leave a hostile environment with a victory.
