The Oklahoma Sooners finally got some good news out of the transfer portal this week, as a player finally committed to the Sooners instead of leaving.
Their first acquisition out of the portal was an unexpected, but welcome one, as the Sooners locked up the best punter in the transfer portal. Oklahoma secured the commitment of Kennesaw State transfer Jacob Ulrich late Friday night.

Ulrich is fresh off of an All-CUSA First-Team Selection this past season. Ulrich's 45.6 yards per punt in 2024 finished 10th in the nation, ahead of Oklahoma's Luke Elzinga. That included a long boot of 77 yards, and Ulrich dropped 27 of his punts inside the opposing 20-yard line. However, none of the punters ahead of him punted as often as he did.
If we filter down to 50 minimum punts, Ulrich rises to fourth place. If we filter to 60, he's in first place by a significant margin (almost a full yard).
He was among the best punters in the country with five touchbacks this past season.
Ulrich was brought in to replace Luke Elzinga, who graduates at the end of the year. He will have three years of eligibility for the Sooners.
I believe this is a prudent move on the Sooners' part, as they address an underrated need on the team and add a player with multiple years of eligibility here. Elzinga was an unsung hero of the season with several crucial punts that flipped the field routinely.
Oklahoma hired special teams coordinator Doug Deakin last year, who immediately flipped the trajectory of the special teams. Now, Deakin is continuing to make splashes and adds one of the best punters in the country. I would expect him to keep adding talent to this unit throughout the offseason.
