On Monday, the Oklahoma Sooners, along with the rest of the college sports world, got some very unexpected news.

According to On3's insider Pete Thamel, the Oklahoma Sooners will lose their Athletic Director, Joe Castiglione, at the end of the 2025 college football season, as the longest tenured AD in college sports is set to retire.

We have heard plenty about him being on the hot seat, and we know there are a ton of fans who wanted him fired, or at least a change made, but never was the idea of his retiring one that had been thrown out there. And, this is a mixed bag of news because of that.

But, it's also a mixed bag of news because it gives the Sooners the ability to move on in a different direction, with a different mind, maybe one younger that is more hip to the idea of what the new college football world brings with NIL and other things. And this is also good because it was time for a change, or was going to be time for one.

But on the other hand, it's kind of sad for a ton of fans and media members. Joe C is a great guy, and many who have had interactions with him would tell you the same thing. Not having a guy like him around anymore, who stood for what OU was more than maybe anyone, will be much different.

This could also greatly affect the Sooners' 2026 season when it comes to a potential coaching hire.

We know that Brent Venables is on the hot seat, or at least, that's how it feels. But is he still on the hot seat with his boss being gone after this year? And if he is fired before Joe C retires, then who makes that decision on the next coach, and how long does that take?

There are so many things about to happen over the next year, and this unexpected news has left some in shock.
