The Oklahoma Sooners have the best defense in football, so much so that Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin is accusing OU HC Brent Venables of stealing signs on defense. During Kiffin's press conference on Monday, he stated that Venables' defense knew what signals the Auburn Tigers were calling and knew every play in that game.
Venables has now responded.
#Sooners Venables continued: “Honestly I don’t know of a team that hasn’t huddled. I think every single team we’ve played the last two years has huddled. And so between that and the helmet communication, I don’t know how that works, but we got enough to worry about just getting…

“I guess coming from Lane, I take it as a compliment? Like, he must have watched our guys be really prepared," Venables told reporters on Monday night. "'Cause that’s who they are, man. They’re relentless. Their detail, the time they spend above and beyond what’s required, that’s the proof of how we’re playing right now. That D-line, how they’re able to dominate physically.
"Honestly, I don’t know of a team that hasn’t huddled. I think every single team we’ve played the last two years has huddled. And so between that and the helmet communication, I don’t know how that works, but we got enough to worry about just getting our guys lined up with the right call and things of that nature. But I guess I’ll take that as a kind of a weird compliment. Our guys must’ve looked pretty good on film.”
This defense absolutely shut down the South Carolina Gamecocks on the road. They allowed just seven points, and even those seven points were kind of weird. The Gamecocks aren't the best team in the SEC, but this is the most competitive conference in football, top to bottom, and this is the same team that scored 20 on the Missouri Tigers and gave the LSU Tigers fits as well.
Venables is right, though; his team is just extremely prepared. That's a compliment, if anything, because "sign stealing," or whatever you want to call it, through watching film that everyone has access to, isn't cheating. This is why teams are encouraged to change their signals more often, and if a team doesn't, then it's obvious the Sooners are a team that will know that, because they're prepared.
Ole Miss has a really good offense, one of the better units in the SEC. However, they have struggled against teams like the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Washington State Cougars when it comes to just barely closing out games. Almost all of their games have been one-score games.
Ole Miss' defense is putrid, so if the offense can do its share and keep the defense off the field, Venables' unit can really show Kiffin what's up when it comes to defense.
